Compare the number of pieces and the usable dimensions

A listing may be for a single chair, a set, a table or an extension leaf. Base your comparison on the number of pieces actually for sale, and check the seat height against the table. For an extendable table, distinguish between the closed and extended dimensions.

Material and finish matter too: two similar-looking tables do not necessarily have the same top or need the same care. Use the IKEA article number to find the materials and the assembly instructions, rather than drawing conclusions from the photo.

Test the joints and mechanisms

Check the stability, how the legs are attached and the condition of the underside of the top. Look at the edges and at any surfaces exposed to water or heat. For an extendable table, have the sliding and locking checked, and make sure all the listed extension leaves are there.

Plan how you will transport the top, especially if it is large or fragile. An apparent saving can vanish if collection needs a vehicle or handling you had not planned for.
