Tell the bed frame, slatted base and mattress apart

The price of a bed may cover the frame alone, without the slatted base, centre support beam or mattress. Note the mattress size and the components explicitly included. The outside dimensions of the frame are not those of the mattress: you need to check both to plan the bedroom.

Look up the new price of the same article, then add the cost of any missing components. A frame that is cheaper to buy can end up costing more than a usable set if the slatted base or the hardware has to be replaced.

Inspect the supports and the textiles

In the store, check the joints, the supports for the slatted base and the parts listed in the assembly instructions. For a storage bed or a bed with drawers, also check the mechanisms and the space needed to open them.

For mattresses and upholstered items, check what the listing says about condition, visible marks and terms of sale. Do not infer how hygienic they are or how long they have been used from a condition label alone. Check the store's terms before you travel.
