POÄNG: a modular classic
The POÄNG is one of the world's best-selling armchairs, made for decades on the same principle: a bent laminated-wood frame and a cushion with an interchangeable cover. It comes in adult, child and rocking versions, with a matching footstool. Crucially, new covers are still sold separately: a tired chair refreshes on a small budget.
What really matters: the frame
A used POÄNG's value lies in its bent-wood frame. A stained cover or a flattened cushion can be replaced; a cracked frame cannot. Inspect the laminated wood along its whole length, especially the curved areas that carry the load.
- Flex the chair: a sound frame springs softly with no sharp crack or visible split.
- Flattened cushion or worn cover: negotiate, since a new cover is cheap.
- On a rocking version, check there is no crack at the most stressed bend.
What to pay
A sound frame with a good cushion is often found at around half the price of a full new chair. If the cover needs replacing, deduct its new price and negotiate accordingly.
