The best savings… if the frames are sound
A complete new PAX (frames, doors, KOMPLEMENT interiors) quickly reaches several hundred euros: it is one of the IKEA purchases where second-hand saves the most in absolute value. The system is modular and stable — 50/75/100 cm frames in 35 or 58 cm depth — so it can be completed new.
But it is also the IKEA piece that suffers most from disassembly: a PAX frame taken apart and rebuilt several times loses rigidity. Disassembly condition is THE buying criterion.
Specific checkpoints
- Frame screw holes: widened or torn = walk away; ask for close-up photos if the wardrobe is already dismantled.
- Sliding doors: check both rails, rollers and warp; these are the most expensive parts to replace.
- Hinged doors: open/close each one and check adjustment — a rubbing door often reveals a warped frame.
- KOMPLEMENT interiors: drawers, rails and shelves are still sold new; a cheap bare PAX can beat an averagely equipped one.
- Ceiling height: 201 or 236 cm overall — measure first, a 236 frame cannot be cut down.
What to pay
Discount any already-dismantled frame heavily (at least -60% off new) and reserve higher prices for wardrobes still assembled that you will dismantle carefully yourself. Doors in good shape and KOMPLEMENT parts hold their value well.
