IKEA new or second-hand: how to choose

Aggiornato il 2026-06-17

When second-hand is unbeatable

The pricier and more durable a piece, the more second-hand pays off. Big systems (PAX, BESTÅ), solid wood (HEMNES) and ranges made for years offer the biggest discounts — often 30-70% — for an identical product, plus an environmental win: extending a piece's life avoids a new build.

When new is still smarter

Conversely, used saves little on small, already-cheap pieces (LACK shelves, small storage): between the trip and a minor flaw, the gap melts away. For sleeping (mattresses), hygiene argues for new. And a piece with very worn fittings can cost more in repairs than it saves.

The method in three reflexes

First, compare the used price with the CURRENT new price of the exact reference in your region — not the seller's claimed price, which is often wrong. Then factor in the real condition and transport cost. Finally, if the right used deal is not available today, set an alert: you will be notified the moment a well-priced unit appears, without giving up or overpaying in a hurry.
