Used BILLY bookcase: the buying guide
Aggiornato il 2026-06-10
Why BILLY is a great second-hand buy
In production since 1979 and sold in the tens of millions, BILLY is probably the most standardised piece of furniture in the world: 40 and 80 cm widths, 106 and 202 cm heights, interchangeable shelves and height extensions compatible across generations. A used BILLY can be completed with new parts, and vice versa.
Its new price is moderate, so the second-hand discount is steep (often more than 50%) — a very low-risk first second-hand purchase.
Specific checkpoints
- Shelf sag: 80 cm shelves loaded with books for years can stay bowed. Flip them to check; new shelves can be bought individually.
- Hardboard back panel: check it is not torn at the nails or warped by moisture — it provides the unit's rigidity.
- Edges and bottom corners: BILLYs moved 'full' almost always chip at the lower corners.
- Wall-anchoring holes: BILLY must be anchored; check the anti-tip fitting is present or plan for it.
- Door compatibility (OXBERG…): drilling patterns changed over the years — verify the exact reference if you plan to add new doors.
What to pay
For a standard white 80 × 202 cm BILLY, expect about half the new price in good condition, a bit more like-new or with doors, clearly less with bowed shelves or a marked back panel. Discontinued colours can command a premium if you must match an existing set.
